What is Lip Piercing and its Precautions

Must read

The main advantage of lip piercing is its effect. It is impossible not to notice it: it is a bright addition to your image, makeup or even just your mood. Our salon will be happy to help you choose this or that lip puncture.

The lips are one of the most sensual and sexy parts of the face. Not surprisingly, people have long sought to highlight, highlight their piercings. But some are still afraid: “It won’t work for me, such a puncture will only exacerbate the shortcomings.” Well, an ordinary thick ring or circular may indeed look completely unattractive, but a miniature diamond or iridescent opal to match the color of your eyes, hair or your favorite lipstick is another matter.

Lip piercings immediately grab attention. Usually representatives of the underground adorn themselves in this way, who generally love all sorts of body modifications. However, there are exceptions. Often the face is pierced by young girls of model appearance, who so express their individuality. Some people do piercings as a sign of turning points in their lives, others to attract attention, and others just experiment with their appearance. It’s good that, compared to the same tunnels, this is a very gentle type of body tuning. A well-made lip piercing leaves no scars or scars. After removing the jewelry, the puncture heals quickly and accurately.

Types and names of lip piercings

For people who are far from this art, tuning will differ only in the type of jewelry – “ring”, “carnation”, “star”, etc. In fact, lip piercing options differ primarily in the location of the jewelry, and not design.

The technique of the puncture also differs depending on the location, as well as the sensations during the procedure. Let’s tell you what lip piercing is (by the way, some species have very interesting names – “monroe”, “smile”).

All types of piercings are divided according to the location of the puncture and the design of the jewelry used. These are completely different things and should not be confused.

According to the type of puncture, there are 5 types of piercing:

The name of this type of piercing was given by the famous birthmark of Marilyn Monroe above the upper lip (by the way, the pop queen Madonna has the same). The puncture is done 2-3 cm above the lip, always on the side, the side does not matter. Such piercing looks very gentle and flirty and is suitable, probably, for absolutely all girls. Guys rarely do such piercing, it is an exclusively female type of lip piercing.

Here, the jewelry is also located in a clearly limited area – under the tip of the nose, in the groove above the upper lip. This piercing is unisex, that is, it is equally popular among both sexes. A type of jellyfish is estrum, in which part of the decoration is in the groove, and part in the lip itself.

Confusion often arises with this type of lip piercing. The fact is that the type of piercing itself is called a labret, and the design of the jewelry for it is in the form of a barbell with a ball at one end and a flat disc at the other. The puncture in this case is located either under the lower lip, or passes through it – vertically or horizontally. The aesthetics largely depend on the chosen decoration. A horizontal labret in the form of a crystal or a tiny metal droplet looks neat and modest, but a vertical or horizontal puncture with a massive banana or a barbell looks much more provocative. Usually rockers and other creative personalities adorn themselves this way.

Low Bret

Something in between a lower lip and chin piercing. In this case, the decoration is located lower than with the labret, closer to the edge of the lower jaw.

Low Bret piercing

Frenum piercing, or smile

In this case, the jewelry is inserted into the bridle of the upper or lower lip, it is not visible when the mouth is closed. Along with the vertical and horizontal labret, this is one of the most painful piercings. It looks very impressive and a little aggressive.

It is advisable to make a puncture in such a way that the jewelry does not touch the teeth as much as possible. Or at least not doing it all the time. From the fact that the metal will constantly rub against the tooth enamel, it can begin to collapse, as a result – caries and other troubles.

The installation of low-quality jewelry adds fuel to the fire: they oxidize, peel off and aggravate the pathological process. That is why a high-quality and safe piercing is a piercing made primarily by an experienced craftsman with high-quality jewelry made of implantable titanium and nickel-free gold.

Safety also includes the presence of an autoclave in the studio, which is guaranteed to destroy HIV, hepatitis and other viruses and bacteria. For these purposes, dry heat, ultraviolet ovens are completely unsuitable, just as soaking in solutions, boiling, rubbing with alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, and so on, is not suitable.

There is an opinion that lip piercings interfere with kissing – in most cases it is not. Sometimes it really takes a while to get used to a piercing, both for the wearer and the partner. However, some lip piercing options only enhance sensitivity by stimulating the partner’s erogenous zones directly with the jewelry. In addition, gently biting the area around the puncture is also very pleasant.

Of course, we are talking about a healed piercing.

Some guys get the idea that braces and lip piercings will interfere with each other even when they crossed the threshold of the studio. This moment is worth considering in advance. It is really better to postpone some punctures until the braces are removed – for example, “Medusa”, “Horizontal labret”, “Ashley” and some other options.

At the same time, each case is discussed individually, so it is better to sign up for a consultation with a master and pick up jewelry already in the studio in order to know exactly how it all will look in the end.

To pierce the lips, different jewelry can be used, which the master selects: straight labrettes with beautiful wraps, “bananas”, rings, circulars.

However, whatever the shape of the product, the material must always be of high quality, so we recommend putting in both fresh and long-existing titanium or nickel-free gold. They do not emit harmful substances that are allergens and not only inhibit the healing of the canal, but sometimes make it impossible in principle.

What jewelry is used for lip piercing?

  • Barbell. Universal piercing jewelry – suitable for almost all types of piercing, except for the smiley. It is a metal rod with balls at the ends.
  • Labret. Looks much like a barbell, only with a disc instead of a ball at one end. This part of the jewelry is the “purl” part and is always on the inside of the lip. Like the barbell, it is an almost universal piece of jewelry.
  • Banana. A type of barbell with a curved shaft. Most often used for types of puncture labret and smile.
  • Ring. Everything is clear from the name here. There are piercing rings with and without inserts. Suitable for all types of labret.
  • Circular. An open ring with decorative elements on the edges, most often balls or thorns. Suitable for labret and bridle piercing.

Piercing Jewelry

As for the choice of lip piercing, there is no point in giving even general recommendations. Everything is strictly individual and depends on the wishes and life guidelines of a person at a particular moment. A good master will always offer several types of lip piercing, explain all the names in detail and, together with the client, choose the best option.

1. The client chooses the jewelry he likes from those offered by the master.

2. The master advises the client about what should not be done for some time after the puncture (eating very spicy or very salty food, drinking too hot tea or coffee, drinking alcohol, smoking). And also learns about the nuances of the client’s health that can affect the piercing or its healing.

3. The master takes away the jewelry to be sterilized in an autoclave along with tissues, a disposable piercing needle and gloves.

4. While sterilization is in progress, the client fills out a questionnaire in which he provides detailed information about his health and studies the care instructions, which he takes with him.

5. Sterilization is complete. The client goes to the office.

6. The master takes out the sterilized instruments, processes the puncture site with a disinfecting surgical scrub, puts on sterile gloves and puts the markings on the puncture site.

7. With a sterile disposable needle, a puncture is made exactly along the markings, the jewelry is inserted immediately after the needle.

The initial healing time after such a procedure takes about four weeks. After the lip piercing procedure, you will have to give up the use of citrus fruits, alcoholic beverages and kisses for a while. To avoid infection, it is better to entrust lip piercing to a qualified specialist who will carry out the procedure correctly and give detailed instructions for further care – this is exactly what they do in St. Scalpelburg.

If you wear a labret, try not to open your mouth too wide: the disc on the inside can touch your teeth. You can shave as usual, but avoid getting aftershave lotion (especially alcohol-based) into your healing piercing.

Do not share lipstick or lip balm with anyone. During healing, you should not use balms in jars: they are applied with a finger, from which an infection can enter the wound.

Plaque can build up on the inside of the dye, especially where the disc connects to the rod. It is sometimes difficult to reach this place with a toothbrush, so it is better to use dental floss to keep the dyeing clean.

Jewelry may sink a little into the mucous membrane of the lip – this is normal; however, if it seems to you that the jewelry has gone too deep / began to sink too much, contact the piercer immediately. During the healing process, the outer side of the puncture (the one directly on the face) sometimes changes color, usually pinkish or reddish, during the first two weeks after the procedure. Frequent saline baths can help alleviate this problem.

First of all, you need to remember that you cannot entrust such a thing as piercing to the first person you meet. This is not just a scratch, this is a real operation that an experienced piercer should do , so the choice of a master must be taken seriously. First, ask your friends – maybe someone knows a good master and salonwhere the lower lip is pierced. Secondly, go around the largest salons of your city and see the conditions in them: if the floors are clean, everything is well-groomed, nice people work, then you can trust yourself, so to speak, to this place. Remember that if you were offered to get pierced by people who have no experience, but they offer you a price two times lower than in the salon – do not agree! This may cost you your health. there are a lot of biologically active points in the area of the chin and lower lip, which can cause irreversible consequences in case of damage, moreover, these consequences are not treated in any way.
Before the procedure, you should thoroughly brush your teeth and rinse your mouth in order to get into the puncture did not get an infection. You also need to make sure that at the time of the operation you are completely healthy, since the lower lip piercing may not take root if there are any inflammatory processes of any severity in the body.
The masters have chosen, signed up for the procedure, but are you afraid of pain during it? In this case, anesthesia is not recommended, since after local anesthesia there will be severe swelling and hellish pain, but if everything is so bad and you are literally shaking, you must first go to an allergist doctor who will write out a certificate stating that you have no allergies to one or another anesthetic. This is very important, since allergies are different: a small rash may come out, or Quinck’s edema may occur, which in nine out of ten cases ends in death. It should be mentioned again: do not save on your own health, as a dead person does not need the saved dollars.
If you do not have an allergy, then the anesthetic can be applied in the form of an aerosol, or it can be injected under the skin, it all depends on your desire, but you should remember that piercing of the lower lip under anesthesia in the form of an aerosol does not hurt so much and swells after the operation … But, if you decide on a horizontal or vertical, then the lip will be chopped off with an insulin syringe, it does not hurt, it just burns a little, but everything will swell just insanely, and the pain will have to be interrupted with analgesics (sometimes even in injections).
1). You have come to the master, lie down on the couch or sofa
2). Piercer does anesthesia if you intend to use it (if not, then go straight to the next point)
3). The master disinfects the puncture site
4). Lipit is clamped (if a labret or a jellyfish is made, it bends back and pierced from the inside, and if it is vertical or horizontal, then it is simply clamped) and pierced with a special needle
5). An earring is inserted into the piercing and it is tightly twisted or fastened.
After the lip piercing is done, it is sealed with a plaster and the client is allowed to go home.
Pain syndrome
It all depends on what a person’s pain threshold is, so you need to be prepared for the fact that piercing of the lower lip will deliver a lot of unpleasant and painful sensations if you did it without anesthesia. The vertical and horizontal are especially painful, as the soft tissues of the lip are damaged. If anesthesia was done, then hellish torment could not be avoided. But, in any case, pain will always arise when laughing, smiling, talking and chewing food for a week or two, no more. If the pain syndrome is very strong, then it can be brought down with analgesics in tablets or injections.
Puncture treatment
If you have a labret or jellyfish, you can flush the puncture with sodium chloride solution, potassium permanganate solution or chlorhexidine. It is necessary to process it so that liquid enters the puncture, that is, so that it is washed from the inside. Pulling out the earring is not recommended. One more point: in no case, do not peel the dried flesh with your nails from the earring! If you really need to wash it, then remove it for ten minutes and put it in a sodium chloride solution, then gently wipe it with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol or calendula solution. You need to process such a piercing of the lower lip twice a day (that is, in the morning and in the evening) for a month, so do not think that if the puncture does not hurt, then it has already healed, since the tissues inside the puncture will fully recover only after a month.

If you have done a vertical or horizontal, then you need to scroll the earring, washing the puncture with a solution of sodium chloride . It is not recommended to pull out the earring, since the puncture has not yet healed and it will immediately begin to bleed and can become very inflamed, and such a puncture with inflammation is fraught with serious complications. If a lot of things have dried up on the earring, and it gives painful sensations when the lips move, then all this can be removed with an ear stick dipped in a sodium chloride solution. It is necessary to process such a puncture for at least three months due to the fact that the tissues of the lips are very delicate and take a long time to recover.

Choosing the Right Earring
For a piercing such as a lower lip piercing, you need an earring made of surgical steel, silver or titanium(it is most suitable for non-standard punctures: horizontal and vertical). You should not save on an earring, as low-quality metal will cause suppuration and rejection.

Replacement of jewelry for the first time

So, your lip piercing has already healed, you want to change the earring. The jewelry that you are going to insert must be rinsed in a disinfecting solution, otherwise it may cause inflammation.

Finally, I would like to remind you that if you decide on piercing of the lower lip, be it horizontal or labret, then only you are fully responsible for the cosmetic result of this operation. If you yourself save on everything, irregularly process and constantly pull out and insert the jewelry (this, by the way, is not an uncommon case among youngsters, since they are not allowed piercing, but they want it and think that nothing will be good) will not end! And little piercing lovers of thirteen years old need to remember the following: it is better to wait a couple of years than to suffer from infection for the rest of your life or even die from blood poisoning!

A good piercer will advise you, even before or during the procedure, to reduce the length of the labret after healing is complete. Depending on the size of the rod and how the healing process proceeded, you may need to shorten the length of the rod several times; wait for the puncture to heal completely before inserting jewelry that fits snuggly.

Saliva can make changing jewelry yourself a daunting task: small pieces will constantly slip between your fingers. keep gloves and one or two clean paper towels handy – you will most likely need them. Labret with a removable disc, consisting of three parts, will be more difficult to screw on without assistance due to their flat shape and small size.

Not much more painful than accidental lip biting, and it happens just as quickly.

It will take 3-4 months for complete healing, but if all our recommendations are followed, the edema will subside in the second week, and the puncture will no longer deliver discomfort in 3-4 weeks. Further, it remains only not to forget that your piercing is still healing and not to “play” with the decoration once again. If you need to shave / paint, you should do it very carefully, without tugging at the jewelry and without bringing cosmetics into the still fresh puncture.

In no case. The jewelry made of implantable titanium has a hard, smooth surface, and the mythical “ingrowth” cannot occur. But you can easily tear off the crusts of dried natural secretions from the still fresh wound so that the still fragile tissue of the piercing canal begins to scar.

A fresh puncture already has to deal with sweat and dust, so you should not expose it to unnecessary external stimuli for as long as possible. The minimum terms are 2 weeks for a solarium, 4 weeks for a pool, and 6 weeks for baths and saunas. After this period, you can slowly start walking there, but immediately after the visit, wipe it with an antiseptic.

The shape and size of the primary decoration depends on the type of puncture. In “labret” (a puncture under the lower lip), “medusa / philtrum” (a puncture in the dimple above the upper lip) and “Monroe” / “Madonna” (a puncture above the upper lip on the right or left, imitating the famous “flies” of divas, in honor of of which this type of lip piercing is called), direct jewelry with a thickness of 1-1.6 mm is placed, in which a flat disk is wound or welded on the inside, and a ball, pebble or other beautiful wrapping of a more non-standard shape on the outside. The length of the base should be several millimeters greater than the thickness of the lip at the puncture site (most often 9-11 mm). Outside, the stone should be at least 2 millimeters, so that during the primary edema it does not “fall” into the skin.

Small bananas are most often placed in the “vertical labret” (vertical puncture of the lower lip), “jestrum” (the same as the vertical labret, but on the upper lip) and “Ashley” (horizontal puncture of the lower lip that goes inward), but sometimes anatomy allows for direct decoration. After 2-3 weeks, when the swelling subsides, the base of the jewelry can already be changed to a shorter one, so that it does not “crawl out” during expressive facial expressions and / or “dangle” inside, injuring the gums / teeth). And to do this, of course, not on your own, but with the help of a wizard.

Firstly, it is not suitable for all types of punctures, therefore, if you want to wear a ring in your lip, you should warn the master about this before the procedure – he will tell you about all the options for punctures “under the ring”, and will also offer to try on several sizes, and you will immediately know how it will look. If this is not done, you can get into a situation where you have already spent a lot of time and effort on healing, but the ring of the desired size squeezes the puncture, or vice versa – it looks bulky.

Secondly, it is not worth installing it in a fresh puncture, since it will constantly scroll, thereby injuring the channel that is trying to form. And in order for the ring not to dig into the lip during the primary edema, it must be one size larger than the one that will neatly fit it. If you immediately put the ring, which will be back to back, during the primary edema, it will “cut” the walls of the puncture, and even if it heals under such conditions (and this is unlikely), then the output will be a migrated puncture with a too loosely seated ring. With careful observance of our recommendations for care, after 3 months you can come for a control examination and installation of the long-awaited ring.

In addition to the above standard punctures, you can make up whole compositions from the same types, placing them in any number and order that your anatomy will allow (pictures with all kinds of heresy like the one that I have). And you can sometimes “hide” the piercing by wrapping in the form of a mole.

With a completely fresh puncture, we do not recommend doing this at all, since no matter how much you (NI?) Were confident in your partner, there is always a risk of transmitting STDs when someone else’s secretions enter your bloodstream. Starting from the 3rd week, you can already return to a full life, but do not forget that the less you disturb the puncture, the faster it will heal. But in general, you get used to lip piercing (as well as tongue piercing ) very quickly and you stop feeling – provided that the puncture is located optimally for your anatomy, and the size of the jewelry is chosen correctly. So the only thing left to think about is your partner’s preferences, and the rest is a matter of your taste and the skill of your piercer.

This happens if you wear jewelry made of material that is not suitable for piercing. Impurities found in gold from jewelry stores, silver and surgical steel can react with natural secretions and trigger the oxidation process. Replacing jewelry with implantable titanium or nickel-free gold usually solves this problem.

If this does not happen locally at the puncture site, where the jewelry comes into contact with the tissues, then the problem is not with it, but with the antiseptic and / or rinse aid. Everyone has a different microflora of the mouth, and the same antiseptic or hygienic rinse can act differently on different people. When the mouthwash is not suitable, it can disrupt the microflora of the mouth, and because of this, this reaction occurs, it is called stomatitis. In this situation, simply try replacing the rinse aid with one from the list provided in our care brochure .

If such an outcome were possible, no master would take responsibility for practicing this puncture.
