This is so that your doctor can make a full medical evaluation of both parents.

Quit Unhealthy Habits

Quitting smoking and drinking is vitally important during pregnancy, but you should also try to give up these unhealthy habits before you try to conceive. It is also advised that you cut down on caffeine when you are planning a pregnancy. This includes tea, coffee, and fizzy drinks. Excessive caffeine intake can prevent you from falling pregnant and it also increases the risk of miscarriage during pregnancy.

Being Overweight

It is crucial to sustain a healthy body weight when you are trying to conceive. Being overweight during pregnancy can lead to problems, such as high blood pressure and diabetes. It can also increase your risk of miscarriage. Try to maintain a sensible diet and follow a healthy lifestyle in order to prepare your body for pregnancy.

Being Underweight

On the other hand, if you are underweight this can also affect your fertility and cause problems during pregnancy. There are many reasons why a person may be underweight and if this is a concern then you should contact your GP for diagnosis and advice. They may be able to provide a diet plan to help you put on weight gradually whilst trying to conceive.

Improve Your Lifestyle

When trying to prepare your body for pregnancy it is important to include exercise into your daily routine. Even a little stroll each day can help to prepare your body for the many changes to come. You can also continue moderate exercise throughout your pregnancy, however, it is important to talk to your doctor or midwife about what workouts are suitable.

Consider Folic Acid

If you’re planning to have a baby, it’s important that you take folic acid tablets for two to three months before you conceive. Folic acid will not only help your baby’s healthy growth and development, but it also helps to prevent serious birth defects such as spina bifida. Folic acid can be found in many foods like spinach, however when you are planning a pregnancy you need around 400 micrograms of folic acid every day, so it is advised to take it in tablet form.

Look After Yourself

Finally, you must remember to take care of yourself when you are trying to conceive. Studies show that high levels of stress can lower your chances of pregnancy. Reduce your stress levels as much as possible both at home and at work. If necessary, talk to your employer if you are concerned that the pressures of work are affecting your chances of conceiving.  You could also ask your doctor or midwife for suggested techniques to help reduce stress.
